Galveston Bay Safety at Sea
A joint U.S. Coast Guard/Sea Scout event at
U.S. Coast Guard Station Galveston, Texas
Saturday, October 20, 2007
BOARDING MANUAL
WHAT: The Second USCG/Sea Scout Safety-at-Sea, a chance to have fun with other Sea Scouts and experience first-hand many of the skills necessary for safety-at-sea: fire fighting, pyrotechnics, damage control trainer, cold-water survival, and USCG missions.
WHERE: United States Coast Guard Station, 1 Ferry Road. Galveston, TX 77050.
Coast Guard Group Galveston is located adjacent to the Bolivar Ferry landings in Galveston. As you intersect Ferry Road from Seawall Blvd. or Harborside Drive, proceed North along Ferry. Approximately one mile past Harborside Drive, the road to the Station veers off to the right (East). Check in with the gate guard with your list of participants and Scout identification and you will be directed to the check-in spot. WHEN: Saturday October 20, 2007 at 0900 hours.
Check in at 0830 hours PURPOSE: In the 1940’s Sea Scout Manual, Davey Shellback said “It’s the seamanship yer learnin’, not the badges yer earnin’, that will comfort ye an’ save ye, when ol’ Neptune starts a’churnin!” Galveston Bay/Gulf Coast Safety at Sea is about maritime and vessel safety training. It is our goal to provide hands-on training activities that can save yourself, your shipmates, and your vessel in the case of an emergency. More importantly we want to have FUN.
HOW: Fill in the online form available at www.ship468.org/sas/registration.htm. Deadline for registration is Monday, October 15.
COST: $10 per person attending, which includes a T-shirt, all activity fees, and lunch Saturday. Each registered person will receive a wrist band, which will pass them through the chow line.
SECURITY: Because the USCG Station Galveston is a government facility in time of national emergency, it is essential that the full names of all participants be included on the Registration Form, and that each participant have available with them photo ID. If your name is not on the list, you won’t be allowed access to the USCG Station.
CODE OF CONDUCT: The code of conduct is based on the principles of the Scout Law, Scout Oath, Sea Promise, Venturing Code and common courtesy. We are guests of the United States Coast Guard. Our goal is to put on a great event for youth. Youth or adults who engage in un-Scout-like conduct will cause themselves or their Ship to be removed from the event.
UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS: The Sea Scout youth participants should wear Sea Scout working blues (Class B) if they have them, or else cruising uniforms or T-Shirts that are consistent within their unit. NO SANDALS OR OPEN-TOED SHOES! Since participants are apt to get quite wet at many of the stations, having a dry change of clothing and plenty of towels is highly recommended. Adults are requested to wear the adult khaki uniform. Jewelry such as necklaces,
bracelets, and rings present a safety hazard at some of the stations and for the onboard asset rides, and therefore should be avoided. NO CIVILIAN CLOTHES, INCLUDING BATHING SUITS, WILL BE PERMITTED. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ALL GUESTS BE RECOGNIZABLE AT ALL TIMES AS SEA SCOUT (OR VENTURING) AFFILIATED.
Beside proper clothing, all units are required to have (1) two deep leadership, (2) tour permits, (3) medical releases and permission to treat forms. The galley will be open for lunch. The base exchange will also be open for souvenirs. SEA AND ANCHOR DETAIL: PASS THE WORD! GET UNDERWAY FOR SAFETY AT SEA! We are looking forward to another great event and hope you can join us.
SPONSORS: This event is organized by Sea Scout Ship 468 and is subsidized in part by the Friends of Texas Sea Scouting (FOTSS).
